Mary, Mother of God January 1, 2009

Today the Church celebrates not just another of the titles of Mary but surely the title that sets Mary apart for any other woman ever born, apart from any saint.  The title, Mother of God, is redoubtable ... it is awesome and powerful.

It is this title, this reality in the life of the virgin Mary, that attracts so many to her.  Mother, Mother of God and our Mother in a spiritual sense.  But Mary is also our sister for all of us are born from Adam.

As we celebrate the beginning of a new year today, let us ask Mary to assist us through her powerful intercession with her Son and the Father.  There is much we need personally, in our Church and in our world.  Let us bring to her as we would to a mother and/or a sister, the burdens that weigh heavily upon us  as well as all others seeking to make the world a better place where peace drives out war and division.

God our Father,
may we always profit by the prayers
of the Virgin Mother Mary,
for you bring salvation
through Jesus Christ
her Son.
Amen.
