Who Am I? 5WL

Today's Gospel

Jesus speaks clearly about who he is. He knows that he has become a "thorn in the side" of religious leaders and authorities." Simply put the work of God is who this man is and all that he does. This encounter offers us once again an opportunity to reflect on the intimate relationship between the Father and the Son.

At the same time this scene in the gospel offers us this question: Do I stand up for who I am as a son or daughter of God? In our day and time there are many issues demanding honesty on the part of the followers of Jesus. Now, in our day, there are many issues that require us to speak the truth ... the truth that will set us free.

Jesus was about to be stoned because he had been so open about his relationship with the Father. Today, in our nation, standing up for what we say we believe most likely will not result in a stoning. On the other hand, however, we face barbs ... the barbs of those who would ridicule and contradict what we have pledged to be through our baptism and confirmation. Obviously it is not an easy time we live in as concerns our faith and its practice.

John performed no sign,
but everything John said
about this man was true.
And many there began to believe in him.

Isn't this the hope we should have when we stand up for our faith? Through our actions, through our convictions, many might come to believe in Jesus Christ.
